Big Mil: Where I’ve Been
By Mauricio Bell
Born December 27, 1967 on the Southside of Chicago and the youngest of the family, Kenny Miller was known as a basketball sensation. Known as “Big Mil” he made his marks in the Chicago city parks by participating in the summer league basketball tournaments. Kenny attended Morgan Park High School where he was known for his scoring and rebounds. In his senior year he rocked the city by averaging 25 points, 18 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots a game. Big Mil was heavy scouted out by many recruiters all over the United States for many colleges. Having a close relationship with his family and not wanting to leave them, he chose to attend Loyola University. Kenny made 395 rebounds in 29 games, he was the first freshman to lead the nation in rebounds, and his record still remains unbroken today.
Although Kenny had the skills to become a professional basketball player in his freshman year of college; he was deemed ineligible to play basketball in his sophomore year. Eventually he dropped out of Loyola College and declared himself eligible for the NBA draft in which it was very disappointing for him because he did not get drafted. Kenny then became a free agent and signed on with the Houston Rockets as their power forward for one and a half years. Although he had the skills to lead Houston in victories he received little playing time so most of his time was spent on the bench. However, his time on the bench was not in vain, Kenny learned more about the game from the one and only Hakeem “The Dream” Olajuwon. Houston won a Championship while Kenny was on the team, after that Kenny moved on to play for the Denver Nuggets. Kenny was with the Nuggets for one year. Although Kenny was not aware of it but someone was watching him; he was then drafted to play overseas in Spain where he holds many rebounding records and a 73% shooting percentage. Kenny’s career led him to play in many other countries where his talents are highly regarded. Miller was voted the best player while overseas.
Kenny returned to the United States in 2002 where he began to train professional athletes. He also has investments in real estates. Kenny created a semi-pro basketball team in Indiana. Kenny also invests in charities that gives back to the homeless population in Chicago. Kenny is a true example of what it means to persevere no matter the adversities he faced he allowed his circumstances to open windows of opportunities.
